Faq's

Q: My essay is 2500 words, it should be 3000. Can you expand it for me?

A: Absolutely, we can do this by ‘fleshing out’ what you have written (although we cannot actually add content to academic papers).

Q: I want my essay to sound more professional, more academic. Can you do this and still make it sound like me?

A: Yes, our editors are magicians and can lift the tone and style of your writing by improving English usage and sentences so that the work sounds more formal and still allows your personality to come through.

Q: I think I have missed some of the citations in the references. Can you check this for me?

A: Yes, if you let us know the citation style required, we will be happy to check that your paper is in compliance - our editors are experienced in all the major citation styles, such as APA, Chicago, MLA, Harvard etc.

Q: If I go ahead and have my essay edited, will you guarantee that I will pass?

A: Only your supervisor or examiners can predict the outcome of your paper. What we can guarantee is that you will have a far greater chance of success once your essay has been edited by EditRelief.

I'm concerned about copyright. You guys won't steal my story or my ideas, will you?

Absolutely not. Edit Relief and its employees make no claim on your copyright, and we don't require credit or acknowledgement on material you've written, or anything else, beyond the fees for the services we render. The only time we would ask for credit for our work is if you commissioned us to write/create something for you (except our CV/resume and cover letter services - you always take all the credit for these, of course), and that's negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

What about confidentiality? The materials I have are private or personal.

Only Edit Relief employees have access to our site and order system, and all staff are required to sign confidentiality agreements before they work for us. All client files are deleted from the site after four weeks, unless a client requests that we keep a copy for future reference. We do not sell, trade or rent your personal information. We also have a secure site - Edit Relief uses industry standard (128-bit SSL) encryption for communications between your computer and our site when you upload documents and pay for your order.

What other books have you edited? Can I talk to other authors who have used your service?

Unfortunately, no. Because of the strict confidentiality policies we describe above, we don't release the names of authors or the titles we've edited.

Can I see a sample of your work?

Absolutely. We offer a free, five-page sample edit to anyone with a book-length manuscript. We know your manuscript is important to you and that it's good to be able to "try before you buy" if you're thinking about sending a long manuscript.

How long have you been in business?

We've been in business since 2002.

What are your credentials? Are you guys qualified to handle my manuscript/document?

Before we'll even consider hiring them, all our editors and proofreaders must, at a minimum:

  • Have a university or college degree
  • Have at least three years professional experience as an editor or proofreader
  • Be native speakers of the language they edit or proofread
  • Provide samples of their editing and proofreading work
  • Pass a language certification test

A typical Edit Relief Word Warrior has two or more degrees, more than 15 years professional experience, and is published in his/her chosen specialization, be it romantic fiction or molecular biology.

What are your business hours?

Our Web site is open for orders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our editing staff are based all over the world, so they're also on duty 24/7. Our administrative staff are available between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST (GMT -5); we generally answer all emails within 24 hours, if not sooner.

Are you guys actual human proofreaders and editors or is it all done by machine/software?

It's real, live human beings doing the work here.

Is your Web site secure?

Edit Relief uses industry standard (128-bit SSL) encryption for communications between your computer and our Web site. This is the same strength as most cash machines (ATMs) and many retail stores.

How can I get in touch?

If you've read ALL our FAQs and the rest of the Web site, and still have a question, see our contact page for details on how to get in touch. But please do read all our FAQs first! We've worked hard to make them comprehensive, and chances are you'll find your answer in there somewhere.

Can I talk to my editor? There are things I want to explain to him/her or I want to see if he/she is on my wavelength, or knows and likes the genre, etc.

If you have questions after we've done some work for you, a customer service representative will be happy to relay your comments and queries to your editor and then send the answers back.

However, we don't have editors and clients talk to each other before or during the editing process, and here's why: Your readers won't have the benefit of a personal chat with you while they're reading your work. Your document or manuscript must be able to stand on its own merit, and your editor has to be able to review your work objectively. Also, when you choose your service from our many options, your manuscript is automatically routed directly to editors who are familiar with, and like, your kind of work.

I live in another country. Can I still use your service?

Definitely! Edit Relief is a global company in every sense of the word. As long as you have a valid credit card or PayPal account, or can arrange to send a check or money order, you can use our services.

I've used a certain style, or a regional dialect, or something else that's special in my book. You won't use a blind spell-check or grammar check and ruin all of that, will you?

No, we're used to seeing all sorts of styles, dialects, special kinds of formatting and other types of creativity. If we're not sure, we'll send an email and ask. If there's something you don't want us to touch, just mention this when you fill in the "Special Instructions" section of our order form.

Do you have editors who know/understand UK English/International English/US English?

Yes, we know all about metres and meters, humour and humor, and spanners and wrenches. Just specify what type of English we should be using when you place your order.

Student/Academic FAQ

Help! I need to hand this in by ____ or I'm toast. How can I get a fast turnaround?

For short documents (225 words) we offer a 7 days and 3 days service.

Can you write me an essay on the War of 1812 or the DNA of Dolly the Sheep by tomorrow?

EditRelief.com strongly believe that students should submit their own, original work.

Would you write up my thesis or dissertation if I gave you all my research notes?

We can give your academic work a thorough content edit to help you strengthen the work before you submit it to your review committee.

I'm good at understanding work, but terrible at expressing myself. Can you help?

As long as you've got a complete paper we can work with, and have chosen one of our editing services, we can suggest revisions and help you improve your writing, organization and structure.

Do you guarantee I'll get a passing grade and/or better mark if I use your service?

We can tell you that your writing, spelling and grammar will be better if you use our proofreading service. We can help you with our content editing service by pointing out weaknesses in your arguments or areas that you need to do more research on. But ultimately your final grade will depend on how much research and effort you put into the paper, and what your instructor requires from you.

I need help with making sure this conforms to APA 5th Edition, MLA, Turabian, Chicago Manual of Style, etc.

No problem. Just make sure you choose an editing service which includes a formatting help option and tell us what style manual we should refer to.

I submitted an MS Word file, and I have my document back, but I can't see what you've changed. Why is that?

It may be that you have the Highlight Changes feature turned off. In Word/Office XP, there's a menu drop-down on the upper left of your screen - change that to the option that says "Final Showing Markup." In older versions of Word/Office, go to the Tools menu, select Track Changes, and make sure Highlight Changes on Screen is checked. If you still don't see any changes, contact customer service.

I submitted a file type other than MS Word, and I have my document back, but I can't see what you've changed. Why is that?

Unfortunately, very few word processing programs have anything similar to Word's "Track Changes" feature, which allows our editors and proofreaders to highlight changes in red so you can see them more easily. For the time being, the best way to see what we've changed is to open your original document beside the revised document and flip back and forth between the two. Our staff will have summarized their changes in their notes back to you as well.

My paper is 2500 words, it should be 3000. Can you expand it for me?

Absolutely, we can do this.

I want my paper to sound more professional, more academic. Can you do this and still make it sound like me?

If I go ahead and have my paper edited, will you guarantee that I will pass?

Only your supervisor or examiners can predict the outcome of your paper. What we can guarantee is that you will have a far greater chance of success once your paper has been edited by us.

What exactly will you do to improve my writing?

We will do proofreading, editing and correction of all spelling, punctuation, grammar errors, and typos. We will copy edit your text for clarity, organization, development of ideas, and diction. Our Doctors of English tailor their editing to suit each text.

Can you be more specific about your editing?

We won't prefere to write the entire text except in rare cases, we also write some additional or substitute words, phrases, clauses, or even sentences if necessary. In other words, we'll make whatever changes we can to improve your text. For example, if there's a more concise or effective way of wording a sentence, we'll revise the sentence. If a better, more precise word occurs to us, we'll use it. If your text is wordy, choppy, disorganized, or just plain mixed up, we'll do whatever it takes to fix it.

Why should I use a PhD for my book editing, dissertation editing, academic editing, or other copy editing? Why can’t someone with a B.A. or M.A. degree copy edit my paper just as well?

A PhD has undergone an intensive and rigorous training as a thinker, scholar, reader and writer. In every one of 10-15 doctoral courses, the student—who already possesses an M.A. degree—must write several fully researched and documented papers, from 10-20 pages apiece. Then, the PhD candidate must take nine or more hours of comprehensive written essay exams that are graded on the quality of their composition and writing, as well as their content. Finally, the candidate must write a dissertation, which is a fully researched and documented book-length study. Throughout the process, the candidate’s writing is scrutinized by a committee of PhDs, who demand excellence before awarding the coveted doctorate degree. “Editors” who have only a B.A. or M.A. degree never experienced such comprehensive and demanding training in writing. Of course, some B.A.’s and M.A.’s are very good editors and teachers, but is banking on their lesser degree a gamble you really want to take with your important work? Frankly, it’s illogical to think that someone with a B.A. or M.A. degree knows as much about writing as does a PhD. If that were the case, then our entire higher education system is bogus and there would be no point in working on your writing for another 3-5 years to attain a doctorate degree.

How do I know for sure that the person who edits my paper is a PhD?

Please see our Terms of Use statement. In it, we guarantee that our Staff is composed entirely of PhDs. Please notice that editrelief.com has been certified by both Truste.
